Contract Announcement for Duchess in Waiting

I’m pleased to announce that Siren BookStrand has contracted for Duchess in Waiting (Embracing the Dream 1) with a tentative release in March. I’m excited to return to Siren BookStrand with another installment in The Montclair Chronicles, my historical series that debuted in 2012 with His Obsession and His Desire. Duchess in Waiting, a Georgian Regency romance set in pre-Revolutionary Paris in 1789, was completed during NaNoWriMo in November, 2013. A short blurb follows.

Lady Ellen Hammond languished for years at Madame Foret’s Academy for Young Ladies while her fiancé and guardian, the Duke of Ralston, enjoyed a rake’s life in London. When she must return to England to escape the violence of the Revolution, she decides that the life of a long-suffering duchess-in-waiting is not for her.

Posing as a valet, Devon Townsley, the Duke of Ralston, accompanies Robert Montclair to Paris to rescue Ellen and her English friends. Unprepared to settle down, he wants to discover if his fiancée will make a suitable duchess. He has his doubts when he must rescue her from captivity in a brothel.

Determined to settle her business in London and travel the world, Ellen finds romance with Rob’s aggravating valet, Tobias Stanford. When sparks ignite between the two and burst into a passionate affair, Devon reconsiders his commitment to living a rake’s life. He discovers, however, that his deceit has a high price.

Welcome Author Kate Patrick

My guest today is Kate Patrick. Writing took a backseat as Kate Patrick became involved with a teaching career, marriage, and motherhood, though books were constant companions. Love stories became a favorite, and began to take the place of mysteries more and more. About three years ago, the idea of writing was rekindled. Now, you can find her late at night typing away by the blue glow of her laptop screen.  She is a member of RWA and currently serves as secretary for GCCRWA.

Kate writes contemporary romance for Siren BookStrand Publishing. She will share a favorite family recipe for pecan pie which is a true southern miracle.  Check out the blurb for her most recent book, Love Beyond the Curve, now available from BookStrand Publishing, and coming soon to Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Within the first week of its release Love Beyond the Curve rocketed to #1 on the Siren BookStrand Mainstream Bestseller list.

Kate’s Pecan Pie

imagesCARMY4PGRita, thank you so much for having me here today to share a favorite holiday recipe with you and your readers, as well as a little bit about my new book, Love Beyond the Curve.  Christmas has always been my favorite holiday.  The music, decorations, and family gatherings all make for a magical time of year.  I especially enjoy baking for the holidays.  All of the women in my family have a dessert they are required to bring to the celebration, and mine has always been a pecan pie.  I also like to give these pies as gifts for coworkers, neighbors, and special people in the community (like the librarians!).  It is easy and I make it using a bowl and a whisk, so it requires minimal clean-up time.  Here it is:

Kate Patrick’s Pecan Pie

*Preheat oven to 300 degrees

3 whole eggs                               ¾ cup granulated sugar

¾ cup white Karo syrup           1 tsp. vanilla

1 TB melted butter

1 cup pecans ( **can substitute cup of grated coconut if you prefer)

1 deep dish unbaked pie shell

In a medium mixing bowl, beat eggs with a whisk (can use a mixer if you prefer).  Add vanilla and sugar and blend with eggs.  Add the Karo syrup and blend together.  Finally, add the melted butter and pecans.  Mix well.  Pour into an unbaked pie shell and place in a preheated oven.  Bake for an hour, but it may take as long as an hour and a half to bake, depending on your oven.  Make sure it only “jiggles” and doesn’t  “slosh” before you take it out! Let it cool or serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.     Enjoy!

Now, I’d like to share another treat with you.  My new book, Love Beyond the Curve, was released December 4th at www.bookstrand.com .  Here’s a blurb about Charlotte and Reed.  Happy Holidays!

Charlotte Hamilton has just moved to Memphis to begin a new job at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. She is attracted to her gorgeous landlord, Reed Jackson, but thinks her plus-size body puts her out of the running as anything more than a friend. Her bubbly personality and fun-loving spirit appeal to Reed, who is used to high-maintenance women. The two quickly become good friends, and Charlotte is happy being “one of the guys.” When Reed is injured on the job, Charlotte stays by his side during the initial days of recovery. As the two spend hours together during his convalescence, a spark ignites an underlying passion they are helpless to ignore. Reed wants to pursue a relationship with the vivacious beauty, but she shies away because of past hurts related to her less-than-perfect figure. Can Reed find a way to convince her that he sees Love Beyond the Curve?

London  March, 1815       Will’s Plan

“You cannot be serious about your intentions unless there is something you are hiding, something so horrific you will not tell me.”

His father, who usually sipped his brandy, savoring its rich flavor, drank deeply and exhaled.

“Are you a lover of men?”

The brandy burned as it spewed out his nose and sprayed his spotless cravat. He gasped for air, then choked, laboring to catch his breath.

It was several moments before he could speak. “No, Father, I can assure you that I am not. You yourself have chastised me for my exploits as a young man.” Some of the Ashford Hall staff and the village women had been very open to his attentions, indeed, had even seduced him. But his father had held him responsible and punished him accordingly.

“No offense intended, but your mother and I had noticed your lack of attention to the young ladies since your return. Before you left for the Peninsula, you were a favorite of the ton. The matrons practically threw their daughters at you. Since your return, you are seldom at home and never at the ton parties.”

Thank God his father was not the meddling sort. He could not say the same for his mother who gloried in gossip and intrigue with her friends from her school days in Paris. For that very reason, he had decided to approach his father in the one place in the house his mother refused to enter. By tradition and mutual consent, his father smoked only in the pool room where he and his influential friends and acquaintances were free to gather, smoke, and determine the fate of the world.“I am aware of that, sir. Rest assured that you will see me out at every opportunity. I do not plan to take an inordinate amount of time to make my selection. This is a case of if it is to be done then let it be done quickly.”

In His Desire, Robbie and Emmy (young Emmy was kidnapped and sold into slavery in a harem in the pirate Republic of Bou Regreg in His Obsession ) are determined that their son will not ruin his life by marrying without love. Tariq (the former harem master) is as loyal as ever to Emmy and Will but maybe a bit distracted.  The villains, and there are several, are really the nasty sort. I am SO excited. His Obsession is released tomorrow. Didn’t know anything about the pre-order deal but saw an email by another newbie on the Author Loop and my jaw dropped. Sure enough, when I hopped over to the Siren BookStrand site, there was my name, a bio, and the book was available for pre-order. On sale, no less. Below is a short blurb and excerpt, followed by a Buy Link or just click the cover.  RB

In 1788 when Emeliese Alexander, a student at an elite Parisian finishing school, boarded a yacht bound for England, she never imagined she would be kidnapped and sold into slavery. Devastated by Robert Montclair’s betrayal and doomed to live in a pirate’s harem in the Republic of Bou Regreg, Emmy vows to create a life for herself and her unborn child – whatever the price.

EXCERPT:      Off the coast of France, 1788

Emmy’s skin crawled. She opened her eyes to find her captor staring at her, his eyes traveling up and down her body, assessing her like the merchants examined the cargoes of her family’s ships when they came into port.

“You are a beautiful girl, all golden. Small for my taste, perhaps, but perfect. Some men find that very desirable. My son does have good taste in his women.”

“You are Robbie’s father?” A silly question. He had just said that, but she was still a bit groggy. She must put her fear aside and gather her wits, then discover his intentions. His men had thought nothing of murdering Jacque. Was he toying with her before she met the same fate or worse?

“I admit my guilt.” He saluted her with his snifter. “Jonathan Montclair, the seventeenth Earl of Ashford, at your service.”

“Robbie is from a noble family?” Robbie had introduced himself as Robert Montclair, he had never mentioned that his family was noble. The English nobility were very particular about who their offspring could and could not marry. She would almost certainly fall into the “could nots,” and Robbie knew why.

The earl cocked a brow. “Baron Montclair. The heir. He did not tell you? I thought you were a fortune hunter looking for a wealthy protector.”

“No, I am a student at Madame Foret’s Academy for Young Ladies. I am not looking for anyone. I will return home to my family next year.” At least, that had been her intention until she had met Robbie. Her future was neither bright nor secure now. The man was evil or insane or both. And he controlled her fate.

His Obsession

SO counting the days until next Tuesday when Siren BookStrand releases His Obsession, my Georgian Regency historical novel. Love my cover. Artist Jinger Heaston pictured Emmy and Robbie before he begins his courtship to win her back. Perfect choice of models, too. Emmy is small but feisty – a student at an elite finishing school in Paris, and Robbie is a champion fencer, a nobleman on his Tour of the Continent. A young couple in love but Robbie’s father has other plans for his son and kidnaps and sells Emmy into slavery in the pirate stronghold of Bou Regreg in North Africa. His Obsession is historically accurate, using primary sources including the centuries-old captive narratives of British slaves ransomed from North Africa. All this week I’ll feature historical background posts for His Obsession. Until tomorrow, Rita Bay
