Victory in the Battle of New Orleans boosted the reputation of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) and helped to propel him to the White House. Jackson, just recently having defeated the Creek Indians, took command of the defenses in Louisiana. He was able to defend New Orleans against the Brits. He was a strict officer but was popular with his troops. They said he was “tough as old hickory” wood on the battlefield, and he acquired the nickname of “Old Hickory”. Jackson became a national hero for his actions in this battle and the war. He received the Thanks of Congress and a gold medal. The anniversary of the battle was celebrated as a national holiday for many years.
