The First Official Flag?

The first official flag, known as the First Navy Stars and Stripes was designed by Francis Hopkinson, a Congressman from New Jersey and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The flag which was designed using the staggered star pattern was first flown by Captain John Paul Jones on the USS Ranger. On April 24,1778 John Paul Jones, in command of the Ranger, became the first American officer to have the American flag recognized by a foreign power.   Another story, later on, may challenge this claim.  There is no original example of this very first flag in existence today.
