Conversation Taboos: Gossiping

While conversation is cornerstone for business communications, certain topics of conversation in certain cultures are off-limits.  Generally, some combination of sex, politics, religion, and money are considered conversation taboos.  These topics can be expanded to commenting on the appearance of others in the room (Could be a wife or daughter), parenting (no one wants their skills critiqued), or physical health (No one wants to hear about your aches and pains.)  Finally, don’t gossip about anyone—it will get back to them.  Monitor nonverbal cues during a conversation to detect if you are on shaky ground with a client, customer or coworker and react accordingly.
